Guest Blog by King Dahl

Introduction
Of everyone I have come across and gotten to know in the special events industry, King Dahl is one of those rare people of whom I can honestly say I am in awe. It’s not just the amazing design that simply continues to flow freely from him. It's also the fact that King is one of the most genuinely nice and kind people that I have ever met. He epitomizes everything that I strive to be as a person, as a friend and most importantly as a designer.

The Evolution of a Masterwork: Gilded Earth
By King Dahl

When my good friend David asked me to “run with the pack” of DesignDawgs, I was ecstatic! As someone whose design sensibilities and expressive event designs I’ve admired for years, the opportunity to share a few ideas with Dave’s readers and fans of AOO Events is something very special to me. As a designer, my lifestyle has always been influenced by freethinking artists, designers, and musicians in every creative discipline. Call it modern, avant-garde, experimental; anything that expands traditional thinking and pushes beyond the mainstream is to me, a source of inspiration and illumination!

Masterworks all begin with an initial idea, only to evolve and take shape as they are worked over and molded into finished pieces that touch the soul. They evoke feelings inside each one of us in a unique way. We’re moved by the convergence of color, form, rhythm, and sensuality. Someone who understands this convergence so well is the creative leader of the amazing MGM MIRAGE Events floral team, George Catechis. His floral artistry is superb, and can only be matched by his mind-blowing painting and sculpture.

As in all art, conceptualizing truly unique event environments involve the same principles and ingredients -- color, form, rhythm, and sensuality -- they are ever-present. But all too often, even the best event ideas flitter away after the event ends, never having the opportunity to be experienced again.

My team and I are passionate about the entire creative process. When we have the opportunity to embrace a look and allow a concept to evolve over the course of multiple events, something magical happens!

Gilded Earth + New Year's Eve
Recently we’ve been playing with a new aesthetic we refer to as “Gilded Earth.” Something we are so excited about we have infused it into four different events shown here. The essence of Gilded Earth is a melding of classic woodland forms, natural elements and contemporary styles. The result is organic and opulent – as timeless as it is modern, as familiar as it is imaginative.
Originally conceived for MGM Grand’s magnificent New Year's Eve Gala, the artistic approach was inspired by the featured performer, Sarah Brightman. After studying the artist's history, music, and on-stage persona, we found a consistent theme of earthy, natural elements throughout. We also discovered her personal commitment to the environment. All are aspects that colored our approach to the design experience.

Images of the event space, beautifully captured by Dahl Photographers, show 180 individual table centerpieces created with hefty segments of tree trunks with their original cuts and angles, straight from the forest floor. Each one was completely unique, with the floral design dictated by the natural lines and curvature of the tree material. These natural centerpieces were juxtaposed with stunning metallic-gold sparkle velvet linens from Cloth Connection and encircled with place settings from Unique Tabletops and Chameleon Chairs.

Nature inspired the design from floor to ceiling. Overhead, five chandeliers – ranging in diameter from 30 to 50 feet – were created using billows of natural-fiber fabric that was hand-cut to resemble voluminous, ornate cobwebs. Form was as important as function, as these chandeliers also served to suspend Entertainment Director, Barry Morgan’s aerial dancers as they performed throughout the evening.

Extensive theatrical lighting cast a warm glow across the event space. MGM Grand Productions artfully pin-spotted the tables from 40 feet above to keep the guests' eye-lines directed downward.

Gilded Earth + Vegas Uncork'd

Kelly McKeon documented this next feature on a more intimate scale. I was quite honored to be asked to augment the culinary artistry of top chefs at Bellagio. The Vegas Uncork’d Gala, sponsored by Bon Appetit Magazine, featured incredible courses from Todd English and Isaac Carter, Michael Mina and Anthony Amoroso, Julian Serrano, Akira Back, Robert Moore, and Jean-Philippe Maury. Wines from Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada exquisitely paired by Master Sommelier, Jason Smith. A menu fit for the heavens!

To complement the fresh, organic ingredients used in these delicacies, all-natural furniture was designed with hand-carved tree stumps. Paying strict attention to our planet’s resources, all of the wood used is reclaimed from the forest floor of the Northern Sierras during fire clearing, so the environmental impact is zero. To merge the worlds of nature and upscale chic, we brought in a “new life” by gilding many of the wooden elements with gold and platinum. Forklifts and palette jacks have to be used to position these oversized set pieces, many weighing several hundred pounds!

Gilded Earth + Morocco

As you’ve probably noticed, often I find that no décor can match the unparalleled beauty of the human form. Moroccan Day Beds looked complete with gorgeous models adding life and interaction to the static decor in this Gilded Earth environment.

And note the terrarium chandeliers in the ceiling! Acrylic domes, repurposed from another event, were incorporated with living orchids, bromeliads, and birch branches, creating a floating garden overhead.

Gilded Earth + Art Nouveau Gard
en

Finally, using gold to symbolize the preciousness of the earth, this last feature -- an Art Nouveau Garden setting titled “Eve.”

A 22-foot-tall, all-natural tree was re-constructed after fork lifting its trunk and individual branches through the ballroom freight door. Soft haze fell over guests around the tree as 20-foot copper “weeping trees” drizzled water from leaf to leaf into ponds at each side. The effect was calm, mesmerizing, and tranquil, enshrouding the ethereal dancers choreographed by Doug Johnson.

The fusion of classic nouveau architecture and form along with earthen elements created a setting that prompted many of the 1,800 discerning guests to proclaim this was “the best event they have ever attended!” Such sweet words to my ears sending a sensation throughout my body -- making me ponder that just possibly, another masterwork had been created.

13/13: The Details

Isn’t it always about the details? The final touches on this hip-hop bar mitzvah (branded as 13/13) were the elements that really made it stand out. These shops which offered candy and swag to guests as they departed look like metal, but there are actually foam core and were made by a woman in Detroit brought in by our client, StarTrax.

And the timeline was the perfect way to work in the highlights from both the birthday boy’s life and those of his hip-hop heroes.

Branding the 13/13 Event

Personal branding is all the rage now, from Facebook to Bar Mitzvahs. We worked on this Detroit bar mitzvah with producer StarTrax (the social division of Pulse220) and they have long been branding social events. As the event designer, AOO Events implemented the branding in as many creative ways possible.
Because the birthday boy loved hip hop, the event was branded with a diamond shaped logo with the numbers 13/13. The look married nicely with the upscale lounge/dance floor area and bling shopping lane we created.

A detail shot of it on a cocktail table.

The projection screen on stage was the perfect canvas for the logo.

And it was used here as well on the fog projection wall that was the entranceway into the lounge.

13/13: Before and After

It's hard to believe that this...

Looked like this...
Only hours before the birthday boy, AK and his "posse" arrived to celebrate his bar mitzvah!
Or that this ...

Became this in hours...

When people ask me how I stay passionate about what I do, I sort of fumble around for the right words... always new challenges, I love design or I love pushing myself to try new things. But these photos tell the story I'd really like to say -- that it's so amazing to physically transform a space; to see months and months (years if we add in all the experience it really takes to do this) of planning all come down to one day. The rush is like nothing else!

13/13: MAKING AN ENTRANCE

For a party within a party, we created two separate entrances. The celebration was a bar mitzvah which we branded 13/13 as the birthday boy was a big fan of the hip hop genre. Our design was a series of different interpretations of … there is no better way to say it … bling!

We added bling to this unique entrance by taking a photo of the guest of honor and projecting it onto a fog screen. The brand 13/13 was added as well. Guests walk through the actual image into the party. The doorway here was the entrance to the dance floor area from the main foyer. This is one of thoseeffects that really pays off in drama for the design and a unique experience for the guests.
More posts on this event on Monday!

GUEST BLOG by Debbie Hawkins, CAE, CMP

Introduction from Dave:
Debbie Hawkins is the glue that keeps us all together. She helps run several Southern Californian associations and has always been there for AOO Events when we’ve needed help navigating the waters of directories, meetings and educational opportunities. She is on the money in her guest blog today that community is more important than ever during these hard times. To this I’d like to add that we need to continue to practice the lessons learned today when tomorrow comes bringing good times!

Where the love begins...an ISES event that brings event pros together.

What’s Love Got to Do With It?
Professional Associations Provide the Lifeline

Businesses Need in a Down Economy

By Debbie Hawkins, CAE, CMP

With everything going on today, professional “communities” are more active than ever and each supports specific needs to the event industry. Along with traditional professional alliances such as ISES and MPI, new groups are being formed through Linked-in, Facebook and Twitter. Being part of one or all of these communities is one of the best ways to grow a business today.

You are probably asking, yes, but what’s love got to do with it? A lot. Each of these groups provides resources, information and support. This is the “love” that comes with being part of a community. If you’re not a member of one of the leading professional associations in Southern California you are missing a world of opportunity for your business.

How does one find trustworthy experts in a wide variety of fields when producing events? When budgets are down and meetings are being booked with infinitesimal lead-times, who will come through for us and make us look like heroes? A resource community filled with companies who have invested time in partnering with others through industry associations, that’s who.

An MPI event

It is critical to see, and be seen, in today’s dawg eat dawg economy (pardon the pun DesignDawgs). Belonging to any one of the top planning organizations in Southern California gives a company a huge advantage over the competition. At programs and educational workshops throughout the year, member planners and producers experience first-hand the latest offerings in every aspect of production. They are highly likely to buy a product or service they’ve seen in action.

Brave and generous members who provide their services as a marketing “showcase” for events are long remembered by planners when the rubber meets the road. They may not be contracted at that same event, but just like everything in life, it will pay off to invest the time developing relationships.

The first question Association Management Specialists (AMS)asks when approached by new vendors is “Are you a member of a Southern Californian planning organization?” We rarely take a chance on an unknown commodity when we have a world of proven talent in our organization’s membership directories.

When we find vendors through memberships, it’s as if they have already been vetted. We trust that they are ethical, high quality producers and we know that they are not vendors simply looking for the next “gig.” They respect their product and service enough to invest a few hundred dollars in a professional membership organization and invest their time to get involved with experts in their field.

No need to ask what's love got to do with it anymore. It's all about teamwork...Pictured here, the MPI team

Staying ahead of the economy today and producing or providing a quality product or service is challenging. That is why the professional associations that support our industries are working hard to accommodate their members throughout this tough time. They are a great resource to businesses, and one that can make your company powerful in the long run.
